For the first time in Pakistan’s history, the transgender community has announced the organization of a ‘Hijra Festival,’ set to take place on the 10th of this month at the Karachi Arts Council.

According to the organizers, the one-day festival aims to offer the transgender community a chance to come together, share moments of joy, and celebrate their identity. At the same time, it seeks to draw public attention to the challenges and issues faced by transgender individuals in Pakistan.

The announcement was made during a press conference at the Karachi Press Club by Hina Pathani, the head of the organizing committee, along with other committee members Bebo Haider, Kami Sid, Nisha Rao, and Dr. Sara Gill.

Hina Pathani and Bebo Haider are widely recognized for their longstanding advocacy for transgender rights in Pakistan. Kami Sid holds the distinction of being the country’s first transgender model, Advocate Nisha Rao is the first transgender lawyer, and Dr. Sara Gill is Pakistan’s first transgender doctor.

While addressing the media, the organizers stated that the Hijra Festival is part of an ongoing movement to secure equal rights and respect for the transgender community in society. “This event marks a moment of celebration for a community that has long been subjected to marginalization and mistreatment,” they shared, adding that the festival will also project a more inclusive and positive image of Pakistan internationally.

The festival will begin with a rally, starting from Fawara Chowk Zainab Street (near the Governor House) and culminating at the Arts Council. A diverse group of participants, including members of civil society and transgender individuals from across the country, is expected to attend.

The organizers acknowledged the tireless efforts of various transgender rights organizations and their allies in preparing for this event. They also expressed gratitude to civil society and notable personalities for their support. Looking ahead, they announced that the Hijra Festival will now be held annually.
